In the urban context of Nanjing, the Foster team and Zhonghai jointly wrote, using light and shadow as ink, to continue writing contemporary human aesthetics for this ancient capital of six dynasties.
As the fourth Nine Sequence series work in China, "Jiangnan Nine Sequence ? Jinling Jinling" not only occupies the core of Hexi, but also uses the "cultural translation" lighting philosophy of the Forcitis team to transform the historical texture of the Ming City Wall into a modern architectural light and shadow narrative. When 33900 pieces of golden feather scales shine in the twilight, what we witness is not only the creation of physical space, but also Foster's deconstruction and reconstruction of urban context.
·· Cultural revival spanning ancient and modern times ··
Project Overview

Jinling, the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, is the cultural hub of the world. Carrying the essence of North and South cultures, achieving a unique cultural context with an inclusive attitude.
The "Jiangnan Jiuxu Jinling Jinling Jinling" is deeply rooted in this fertile land, with the core concept of "cultural revival spanning ancient and modern times". It integrates the symmetrical and orderly layout of the Ming Palace Museum with the dynamic layout of the Zhanyuan Garden, creating a balance between order and nature in a 3000 square meter art club.
From design concept to functional layout, we have created the pinnacle of the Jiuxu series products, centered around a sunken courtyard and integrating multifunctional spaces into one. Not only does it continue the texture memory of the ancient city walls, but it also reconstructs the high-end community ecology with modern techniques, allowing the millennium cultural context to be revitalized in fitness, social interaction, and neighborhood integration, writing a resonance chapter between traditional elegance and contemporary life.
·· Urban Core Hub Full Dimensional Life··
Geographic location

Jiangnan Jiuxu Jinling Jinling is located in the core area of Hexi New City in Nanjing, specifically at the intersection of Yecheng Road and Pingliang Street in Jianye District.

With the posture of "urban longitude and latitude origin", connect the ecological corridor along the Yangtze River coastline with the CBD financial core - the double subway can reach Nanjing South Station and Olympic Sports Center in 10 minutes, and build a top of the line living circle within 2 kilometers of Huacai Tiandi, Nanwai Branch School, Youth Olympic Park, and Children's Hospital. Building on the industrial potential of Alibaba and Xiaomi headquarters in the west, attracting elite traffic from the financial city in the east, seamlessly switching between the riverside green axis and urban prosperity, anchoring asset security and long-term value, and achieving a model for urban living in the central area.
part 01
Lighting design
The FORCITIS team explores the time marks on the bricks of the Six Dynasties and decodes the light and shadow genes contained within them, drawing inspiration from stone cities and Ming city walls. By using nighttime lighting art, the elements of Jinling are cleverly displayed, blending with architecture and space to achieve a harmonious and unified expression of form and meaning.

The architectural lighting carefully controls the angle of the illuminated surface and the receiving space. Every brick and stone seems to be telling the "Jinling accent" that has been passed through for thousands of years, leading people to shuttle between ancient and modern times and appreciate the unique historical charm of Jinling.
part 02
Design goal
Light and Shadow Representation: Through an intelligent control system, different facade relationships and forms of the building's glossy surface and irregular shapes are displayed at different time periods, enhancing the artistic charm of light and shadow.
Color temperature planning: The building mainly uses warm white light (color temperature range 3500K) to reflect the elegance, stability, and light luxury quality of the building; Emphasize the hierarchy of lighting, enhance the expressiveness of building structures and the sense of hierarchy in the overall space.

Design Highlights
Highlight 1: Precise projection lighting, different lamp angles meet the lighting effect
Angle design: The Foster team finely regulates the angle of light projection. Through precise calculations and repeated tuning, every beam of light can be accurately positioned, while protecting the daytime appearance of the building and significantly enhancing the nighttime lighting level, endowing the building with unique day and night charm.

Lamp selection: Only six sets of high-efficiency floodlights are selected to fully meet the lighting needs of the building. This measure not only effectively streamlined the number of equipment, but also significantly reduced subsequent maintenance costs, balancing efficiency and economy.

Environmental design: Abandoning the traditional pole lighting method, it maximizes the beauty of the building during the day while reducing the impact of lighting facilities on the surrounding environment, allowing the building to coexist harmoniously with the environment.
Highlight 2: Sunken Courtyard Phoenix Complex Skin Lighting
The design of the sunken courtyard is inspired by the poetic scene of "Xiao Shaojiucheng Phoenix Comes" in "Yongle Grand Ceremony · Movement" and Li Bai's "Dengjing Phoenix Platform", which transforms the traditional phoenix totem into dynamic space narrative, and combines green plants to create the oriental garden artistic conception of "Phoenix perches on wutong".

The complex surface of the phoenix shaped sculpture poses a significant challenge to lighting. The Foster team first built an actual prototype for testing, and then used software simulation analysis to determine the final solution.
For different parts of the sculpture, three lighting methods including linear lighting, point lighting, and surface lighting were cleverly used, and a linkage control system was carefully constructed to successfully create a lifelike visual effect of "Phoenix Flying"
At fixed times every night and during traditional festivals, the lights illuminate the Phoenix Art Architecture, truly achieving a lifelike phoenix habitat atmosphere.
33900 customized gold scales, finely crafted with unique numbers assigned to each scale, hand stitched together with ingenuity, creating an unparalleled visual feast.

Ascending the stairs, it feels like soaring above the wings of a phoenix, immersing oneself in the flow of light and shadow - the breath of the phoenix.

Highlight 2: On site lighting debugging to ensure landing effect
The on-site construction is orderly. First, install the lighting fixtures and complete the debugging to ensure that the lighting parameters meet the standards. Then, install the Phoenix device to ensure soft and natural lighting.

After careful debugging, the buried lights at the entrance have shown excellent results. The emitted light precisely illuminates the low area art wall, clearly outlining the rich layers of the wall at night and creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

Long distance projection presents an ideal effect, and the lamps are cleverly installed inside the landscape vegetation, hidden and invisible, achieving both lighting function and maintaining the overall harmony and aesthetics of the landscape.

Local details
In order to achieve the integration of ancient and modern dimensions in space, and to achieve a unique expression of spatial narrative across time, the lighting design adopts a subtraction strategy.
Using floodlighting as the main form, we aim to illuminate the entire building to the fullest extent possible. The selected lighting fixtures adhere to the principle of simplicity and are cleverly concealed, creating a "visible light but not visible light" effect, giving the building a stronger tone and artistic appeal.

"Jiangnan Jiuxu ? Jinling Jinling" creates the aesthetic atmosphere of Jinling with three elements of golden autumn wutong, gold foil, and flower embroidery. The functional facilities of high-level life are compatible with the art exhibition, creating a luxurious and suitable field with the same frequency of material and spirit.
Drawing on the profound historical memory of Nanjing, we aim to recreate the romantic charm of 'once autumn winds rise, leaves fall all over Jinling'. The ancient blue bricks and black tiles are gently awakened by modern design strokes, telling the poetic dialogue between ancient and modern times through the interplay of light and shadow.

The purple paulownia tree sways, occasionally accompanied by the flow of eight tones, creating a serene scene of harmony between the two.
In the meticulous layout of the wandering route, with the clever narrowing of the line of sight, the scattered obstruction of landscape stones, and the poetic presentation of the vast water surface, a space experience rich in musical rhythm and melody is created. Every turning point and every step corresponds to the solemn and elegant beginning and end of the official ritual music ceremony.

When the last ray of dusk sinks into the Yangtze River, the carefully crafted light veins of the Forcitis team, amidst the clever twists of the diamond shaped buildings, spray out brilliant light like a soaring eagle spreading its wings. Just like ancient people climbing the Phoenix Terrace in Jinling, at this moment, the "Phoenix Feather Light Track" also woke up from the silence on time, flowing and shining brightly in the gradually deepening dusk.
This diamond shaped landmark, carefully crafted from 139000 ceramic tiles, is like a dazzling gem set in the city's night sky. Under the precise drive of the intelligent control system, it has transformed the legendary Phoenix Terrace depicted by Li Bai into a breathtaking light and shadow poem within reach. Every ray of light, every change of light and shadow, seems to be telling a story of the past.
··Light plastic constant production, new cultural context··
From the perspective of projecting light on Ming city wall tiles to the coordinated control of phoenix wings, every technical detail carries a reverence for the cultural context of Jinling. This is not only a contemporary translation of urban memory by the Foster team, but also a paradigm leap for China's top luxury lighting from functional requirements to spiritual resonance - allowing buildings to be reborn in the darkness and civilization to be sustainable in light and shadow.
The "Jiangnan Jiuxu Jinling Jinling Jinling" is not only a profound tribute to the long history and culture of Nanjing, but also a forward-looking exploration of the future urban spatial development. As a rising "temple of art and culture" and "spiritual fortress", it cleverly connects the past and the future, showcasing Nanjing's profound cultural heritage and unlimited development potential, and becoming a well deserved urban landmark.
